KA Argo Parahyangan: Jakarta Gambir to and from Bandung by Train

The Argo Parahyangan is an Executive class-only or Executive-Business class train that plies between Jakarta Gambir Station and Bandung Station. Trains depart frequently from each station, bearing the same name but with a different train number.

You can either get your ticket from the counters or at https://kai.id/ but your overseas credit card may not work. However, you can use Tiket.com to book your tickets from outside of Indonesia. You can book them at many other places in Indonesia such as convenience stores but you don’t get to choose your coach or seat. The journey takes on average about 3 hours and 15 minutes.

After purchasing your ticket online, key in the 6 digit alphanumeric code into the various “CTM” machines around the concourse area of the station. You need to have an actual ticket to travel, you cannot use the code to travel.

UPDATE: PT KAI now uses the boarding pass system.

You will get an actual ticket to travel.

Alternatively, just do your whole booking at the counter, but it would be risky if you don’t live in Indonesia and you want a particular train timing and seat number booked in advance.

Before entering the platform, you need to show your ticket with a valid photo ID. The staff at hand will then validate your ticket for travel, and allow you to enter the platform.

Signs are placed on the platform for the next departing train and the location of your coach, alternatively just ask the staff at hand.

The Argo Parahyangan is a locomotive-hauled train with Executive class coaches attached.

The conductor will come around to check your ticket after departure.

The train provides meal services at your seat too. Prices are listed in the menus the attendants carry.

Nasi Goreng Parahyangan is the choice meal for this morning for me.

Also photographed is the Nasi Ayam Pandan and the Zuppa-Zuppa, a cream soup with a puff on top. All items in the menu are available on the train I took.

The view changes drastically after around 1 hour away from Jakarta.

Rice fields and tea plantations are not uncommon.

The Argo Parahyangan also passes over the longest bridge and longest tunnel in Indonesia.

Seats can be rotated to face whichever direction you prefer, or to form a 4-seater bay if you are travelling in a group.

Upon arrival at Bandung station, you can catch a taxi or use the local Angkot to get around.
