Day 7: Marseille

London to Singapore Day 7 01

Marseille is located in southern France, overlooking the Balearic Sea. I was here to meet a friend, to try the TGV, and it also made for a convenient stopover to Rome later on.

It was also a sudden change in temperature for me, with 1 degree weather in the UK to 28 degrees at noontime here.

My first stop was the Abbey of St. Victor, named after the local saint and martyr. It made for an excellent view of the city, with both sea and land developments visible.

Located around this courtyard is also an old shop for Marseille soap, which is still handmade till today.

Next, a stroll down Quai de Rive Neuve, on the way to find lunch.

Many locals dock their yachts and boats here. Across this bay is the Marseille City Hall (Hôtel de Ville).

More yachts.

Here’s a strange sight that even my French friend hasn’t seen in Marseille – a tuk tuk. No idea where it came from or where it was going to though.

Next, the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. It is located on a high point in Marseille and completed in 1864.

The interior architecture is largely influenced by sailors, with plaques at the side giving thanks for a safe journey or miraculous healing.

From here, you can also get a commanding view of Marseille.

Next city, Cassis.
