Since the cessation of KTM Intercity services in April, there is no more through train service between JB Sentral and KL Sentral. However, an overnight train combination still exists if you wish to travel at night, but still includes the compulsory transfer at Gemas.

The 9220up ETS Gold awaits across the platform from the arriving 44up Ekspres Selatan.

The 9220up ETS Gold plies from Gemas to Padang Besar, skipping the Butterworth branch. Do note that there are missing stations in the on-board information map – stations will be announced manually by the train captain.

The crowd was more than I expected on this “night train from JB Sentral to KL Sentral”.

The seat was a bit slimmer and the recline was a lot lesser than the seats on the previous 44up Ekspres Selatan. Since I couldn’t really sleep anymore thanks to the wake-up call before Gemas, I headed to the cafe at Coach C for an extremely early breakfast.

This is the Nasi Tomato with a side of Chicken Curry. RM8 a la carte or RM9 as a combo with a bottle of mineral water. Tasted good, with the rice retaining the moisture from the tomatoes.

This is the usual Nasi Lemak, still one of the safest bets when ordering food on the ETS. Tastes like Nasi Lemak. RM8 a la carte or RM9 as a combo with a hot drink of your choice.

Arriving at KL Sentral slightly more than 2 hours after departure from Gemas.

In fact, my train arrived 8 minutes earlier than schedule. This train is scheduled to arrive at 6.50am and depart again at 6.56am for Padang Besar.

The journey from JB Sentral to KL Sentral with this night train connection takes 7 hours and 10 minutes.
