Hotel Tropicana Gemas is a local hotel in the heart of Gemas, just a few minutes walk from Gemas Railway Station. For this layover to my next morning Ekspres Selatan 41dn train to JB, I opted to stay here for the night.
This is part of my journey from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by train, taking 18 hours and 50 minutes. Follow this train journey from the links below:
- KTM Komuter Klang Valley Sector 2053dn: Sentral Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Sebang (Tampin) by Train
- Ekspres Selatan 45dn: Pulau Sebang (Tampin) to Gemas by Night Train
- Hotel Tropicana Gemas: Comfortable Hotel For A Short Overnight Transit
- Ekspres Selatan 41dn: Gemas to Johor Bahru Sentral by Morning Train – Goodbye Paloh Railway Station
- Shuttle Tebrau 79dn: Johor Bahru Sentral to Woodlands CIQ by Train
Hotel Tropicana is located within Bangunan Lim Chin Moh, which features other shop lots as well. However, due to my late arrival, they were all closed already.
Heading to the lobby to check-in to my room. I made my booking through Facebook Messenger. Hotel Tropicana is currently not available for online bookings, nor is their website up.
The room rates at Hotel Tropicana. A little bit of difference in naming their rooms as compared to almost every other hotel out there, “Single” refers to the bed type, and not for single occupancy. Similarly for the “Double”. Only the Standard Single Room is for solo occupancy, whereas the rest are actually twin beds.
A RM50 deposit is taken at check-in, in addition to my payment of RM89 (~S$29.23) for the Deluxe Single Room and RM10 Tourism Tax.

All rooms in Hotel Tropicana are non-smoking.
My first impression of the Deluxe Single Room was that it is HUGE.
There are some headboards on the wall for a Queen-sized bed and 2 single beds, so I guess this was converted from a family room.
The twin beds in the super spacious Deluxe Single Room.
The Deluxe Single Room comes with a desk, a sitting area, and a TV set.
A closed wardrobe and hanging rack are available in the Deluxe Single Room.
The shower and toilet are in a shared area. Towels are provided on the bed, and soap is provided by the shower.
As the room was really spacious, perhaps too spacious, the single air-conditioning unit took a long while to cool the room down, but it was still overall fine temperature-wise after taking a shower. The bed and pillow was surprisingly comfortable too for a local hotel, and the room size felt luxurious, something which I was totally not expecting from their pictures taken on Facebook.
An early morning check-out was not a problem as there is a receptionist on standby. Perhaps they get a lot of train passengers to already prepare for late check-ins and early check-outs.
If I were to stay overnight in Gemas again, I’ll definitely come back to Hotel Tropicana Gemas.
