Kereta Sewa from Padang Besar Railway Station to Arked Niaga Padang Besar (“Duty Free”)

From Padang Besar Railway Station, there are a few Kereta Sewa waiting at the car park for a steady stream of passengers. Kereta Sewa business in Padang Besar should be good now, with the closure of the pedestrian footbridge that linked Padang Besar Railway Station and Padang Besar town where everything is.

The current main entrance of Padang Besar Railway Station only leads to the car park which is on the opposite side of the track from Padang Besar town, leaving passengers little option but to take a Kereta Sewa to Padang Besar town, or walk half an hour around the tracks.

To get to Arked Niaga from Padang Besar Railway Station, I was quoted RM10. Pretty steep for a previously 10-minute walk.

The overhead bridge between Padang Besar Railway Station and Padang Besar town is now closed since 1 September 2020. Looks like it was in breach of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959.

I wonder how it got built in the first place and operated for so many years before then.

My Kereta Sewa took a shortcut below the railway tracks. This is a single lane tunnel, so my driver kept sounding the horn throughout the journey through the tunnel to warn incoming vehicles.

Passing by Padang Besar Bus Hub. This serves myBAS Kangar (myBAS Perlis) Bus Service T11 to Kangar, although I’m not sure if it’s still in operation with COVID.

My Kereta Sewa stopped me on the main road before the car park.

Here at Arked Niaga, I did some quick shopping before returning back to Padang Besar Railway Station for my next train to Butterworth.

Heading back, I went to the Taxi Station to get a Kereta Sewa.

Unfortunately, the Taxi Station was worryingly empty, so I continued my walk to the main road.

I then crossed the road to Padang Besar Bus Hub as I saw a Kereta Sewa counter over there.

Padang Besar Bus Hub has 1 bus bay to cater for 1 bus. Not sure if the word “hub” is appropriate then.

There is a Kereta Sewa counter over here which is unmanned but there’s a number to call.

While standing in front of the counter though, multiple Kereta Sewas on the main road honked for my business, so I hopped on to the nearest available Kereta Sewa, which costed me another RM10 to head back to Padang Besar Railway Station with.

Not a cheap journey to visit Arked Niaga now, but at least my curiosity and mission had been satisfied.
