Due to increasing demand, you are advised to be ready at the platform at least 15 minutes before the scheduled train departure on busy days (eg. public holidays) in order to get a chance to board the train. Failing to do so may result in waiting for the next train in 1 or 3 hours time. Please also allow passengers to alight before boarding.

KTM Komuter Northern Sector Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does the KTM Komuter Northern Sector go to Hat Yai?

No.

Why?

The line between Padang Besar and Hat Yai is not electrified, so electric KTM Komuter trains cannot run on them. The line is also not within Malaysia, so it is not just up to KTM to implement a new service.

How do I travel from Butterworth to Hat Yai?

Change to the Hat Yai-Padang Besar Shuttle Train at Padang Besar.

How much is a ticket from Butterworth to Hat Yai?

There is no through ticket from Butterworth to Hat Yai. Buy a ticket at Butterworth for the train to Padang Besar, then buy the Hat Yai-Padang Besar Shuttle Train at Padang Besar. Tickets for the Hat Yai-Padang Besar Shuttle Train cost 50 Baht one way. See below for KTM Komuter fares.

Must I only travel from Butterworth to Hat Yai? Can I travel from other stations such as Taiping, Sungai Petani or Alor Setar to Hat Yai also?

Of course you can. The KTM Komuter serves all stations along the route and charges fares according to the distance travelled. Change to the Hat Yai-Padang Besar Shuttle Train at Padang Besar.

Why does the KTM Komuter Northern Sector terminate its service at Ipoh? Why not at Batu Gajah or Tanjung Malim or [insert your favourite station here]?

The KTM Komuter Northern Sector terminates at Ipoh because, in my opinion, it is meant to serve as an extension from Padang Rengas to Kuala Kangsar, with the next nearest crossover at Sungai Siput. Serving Sungai Siput, however, is close enough to Ipoh, the capital city of Perak. Crossovers are available at Ipoh leading to all lines, being a main station. The KTM Komuter Northern Sector extension to Kuala Kangsar, Sungai Siput, and Ipoh is also on the initiative of YB Tuan Kesavan A/L Subramaniam, Member of Parliament for Sungai Siput, who submitted this issue to the Ministry of Transport, YB Tuan Anthony Loke Siew Fook, and this issue was supported and approved.

If we go further and further, we might be debating for a Padang Besar – Gemas Komuter line, so let’s leave it as such for now. You wanna go further? Take the ETS.

  1. Very well presented page of KTM Komuter northern section and nearby related bus services. Complete with Google Mymaps missing from official ktm/buses pages. Well done Railtravel Station. 😉

  2. this blog is so comprehensive that i actually wondered if its the writer’s full time job. i can imagine myself travelling by just reading this. more impressive is the fact that the writer is actually singaporean and giving out concise updated info regarding rail transportation here in malaysia. and yet there are still ppl asking questions with obvious answers. thank you so much for the great effot

  3. Never success on buying ticket online, either through the website of KTMB or through agents available. As I live in Terengganu, to plan my journey from Kuala Lumpur to Penang by train is too difficult when the booking system through online always ends with failure. As KTM is the oldest public service in Malaysia, having an unstable online system for booking is a shame.

  4. Can i know if want to travel from taiping to kobah by using the last train 22.07. Then i have to transit at bukit mertajam first or the train will direct to kobah ?
