The Penang Ferry is a roll-on/roll-off car and passenger ferry linking the island of Penang at Georgetown to Butterworth on the mainland. The journey takes around 20 minutes, but it is the cheapest way to cross the straits at just RM1.20 (SGD0.43) for a return ticket.

The Rapid Ferry / Penang Ferry Service has been replaced with the Penang Fast Ferry.

Butterworth to Pulau Pinang (Penang Island)

From the Butterworth Railway Station, follow the signs and cross the bridge over the railway tracks.

No tickets are issued. The counter provides small change for coins to insert into the gantries leading to the waiting area. The gantries provide change as well, but it only accepts coins.

An attendant is stationed at the gates in case you are unsure on how to use the gantry.

This ferry provides seats throughout the upper deck. Vehicles are found on the lower deck. The seatbacks can be shifted according to the direction of travel, or your own preference if you are travelling in a group. You could also stroll around the deck for fresh air. Some ferries have lots for cars on the upper deck too.

Pulau Pinang (Penang Island) to Butterworth

From the bus terminal, walk along the sheltered walkway to the ferry terminal.

You will end up directly in the waiting hall of the Weld Quay Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal in Butterworth. No payment is needed as trips back to the mainland are not charged.

When the ferry is ready for boarding, just follow the staff’s instructions. Cars will be loaded first, followed by passengers.

This ferry has a mixed upper deck with cars and passengers. It may be more comfortable to stand around the deck instead of sitting in the provided benches in the middle.
