Shuttle Tebrau 89dn: Johor Bahru Sentral to Woodlands CIQ by Train

The Shuttle Tebrau is a popular shuttle train plying between JB Sentral and Woodlands CIQ, with tickets easily selling out 30 days in advance for the 5-minute across the Causeway. Heading back to Singapore on a Sunday night, I opted to camp online before 8.30am 30 days before departure to secure my ticket as the Woodlands Sunday night jams back into Singapore is a weekly nightmare.

Don’t bother heading to the ticket counters as on-the-spot tickets are never available for Sunday noon to night departures.

The Shuttle Tebrau waiting and boarding area is at Gate A of JB Sentral.

The gates of Gate A will open 30 minutes before departure.

For southbound journeys on the Shuttle Tebrau from JB Sentral to Woodlands CIQ, an actual counter ticket printout is no longer required and not provided at JB Sentral. You can print out the online ticket at home, or simply flash the QR code on your phone at the gate.

Just before 30 minutes before departure, a queue magically forms for boarding the Shuttle Tebrau.

Join the queue if you like, but it really doesn’t matter if you’re first or last. Do note that the gate will close 10 minutes before departure.

First, your Shuttle Tebrau ticket and passport is physically checked and tallied with the departure time and your identity by a KTM staff.

After your Shuttle Tebrau has been checked, head to the turnstiles to scan your ticket to enter. (I know, what’s the point of the turnstile when your ticket has already been checked right?)

Scan your ticket at the turnstiles.

If you have already purchased your ticket online, you may use the QR code on the ticket print-out or the direct .pdf file on your phone.

Once the light flashes green, proceed through the turnstiles.

Head downstairs for Malaysian immigration and customs.

Once you have cleared Malaysian immigration and customs, you will find yourself in this waiting room. Depending on the time of day and availability of rakes, you may need to wait here before heading down to the platform.

Once calls are made for boarding or if you see the door freely open without a crowd in the waiting room, head down to the platform.

The Shuttle Tebrau usually departs from Platforms 3 or 4, but they may be changed depending on operational requirements.

Board the train at whichever coach you prefer – the Shuttle Tebrau is free-seating for the 5-minute ride.

24116 Tun Kudu heads my Shuttle Tebrau train back to Woodlands, Singapore, a few days before she was burned at Renggam.

Boarding the Shuttle Tebrau.

The Shuttle Tebrau is made up of refurbished ASC (Hyundai-Padu Sedia) coaches which feature reclining seats in a 2+2 configuration.

Departing from JB Sentral on time at 7.00pm.

After JB Sentral, the train heads straight on to the Johor–Singapore Causeway.

Crossing the Straits of Johor, also known as the Tebrau Strait.

I wonder how many water pipes are flowing into Singapore versus flowing into Malaysia.

Crossing the Singapore-Malaysia border as demarcated by the meeting of both country’s yellow boxes on the road.

Heading on to Woodlands CIQ.

So glad I’m not on a bus on a Sunday night.

Heading into Woodlands Train Checkpoint.

Here, I headed into the station to clear Singapore immigration and customs, and headed out to Marsiling MRT Station by SMRT Bus Service 950.

Overall, the Shuttle Tebrau is a quick and easy journey from Malaysia to Singapore which takes just 5 minutes of travelling time. Though be sure to book your tickets early as such a convenient service tend to sell out very early, as early as 5 minutes after opening for sale 30 days before departure nowadays.
