Batam is a duty-free island in Indonesia south of Singapore, just about an hour away by ferry. Most tourists go to Batam for a day shopping trip or an overnight resort stay. Frequent ferries operate from HarbourFront in Singapore, while some depart from Tanah Merah as well for eastern Riau destinations.
