Melaka Monorail (Monorail Themepark & Studios (MTS)) (Defunct)

The Melaka Monorail or Monorail Themepark & Studios (MTS) was Melaka’s only rail-based transport system. Despite comparisons with other monorail projects in Malaysia, the Melaka Monorail’s purpose seems to be more for sightseeing purposes rather than mass transit. Phase 1 of the Melaka Monorail was built at a cost of RM15.9 million and covers 1.6km between Hang Jebat Station adjacent to The Shore Melaka and Hang Tuah Station at Kampung Bunga Raya Pantai on a bi-directional single track.

The Melaka Monorail was completed as a complete uni-directional clockwise loop covering 2.5km starting from Tun Ali Station, crossing the Melaka River plying parallel to Jalan Tun Mutahir, bypassing Hang Tuah Station, running parallel south on the west side of the Melaka River, bypassing Hang Jebat Station, crossing the Melaka River again, running parallel to Jalan Tun Ali, and returning back to Tun Ali Station.

Boarding and alighting can only be done at Tun Ali Station.

Development and Launch

Conceived to bolster Melaka’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Melaka Monorail project commenced construction in 2008. The initiative aimed to provide an efficient and unique mode of transportation for tourists while addressing traffic congestion in the bustling city center.

The first phase of the monorail was inaugurated on October 21, 2010, featuring a 1.6-kilometer track along the scenic Melaka River. This phase included two stations:

  • Tun Ali Station (near Hang Tuah Mall)
  • Hang Jebat Station (close to prominent tourist attractions)

Features and Route

The monorail’s initial route was designed to connect key tourist areas along the Melaka River. It offered a unique perspective of the city’s historical and cultural landmarks. However, its limited track length and two-station configuration restricted its functionality as a comprehensive public transportation system.

Challenges and Operational Issues

Despite its ambitious goals, the Melaka Monorail faced significant challenges from the outset:

Technical Malfunctions

The monorail experienced frequent breakdowns, including a high-profile incident on its opening day when it stalled mid-journey with passengers on board. Operational reliability became a recurring concern, undermining public confidence in the system.

Intermittent Service

Service disruptions were common due to technical glitches and insufficient maintenance. These issues led to multiple periods of suspension as authorities worked to address the problems.

Efforts to Revive the Monorail

In 2017, the Melaka state government sought to rejuvenate the monorail by partnering with CRRC Changchun, a Chinese company specializing in railway technology. The agreement included upgrading the track system, introducing new trains, and enhancing operational efficiency.

The monorail resumed operations in December 2017 following these upgrades. However, challenges persisted, and its performance continued to fall short of expectations.

Current Status

The Melaka Monorail has closed with weak demand as a tourist attraction and which does not work as a fully functional transportation system.
