If you are unable to catch the straightforward VIP bus method, frequent minivans and songthaews operate between Ubon Ratchathani and Chong Mek in Thailand and between Pakse and Vang Tao in Laos, linking the key cities to the border. Check with the driver or ticket counter for the fares.
If you take this option, you have to walk around 300 meters from the Vang Tao terminal to the Laotian border post, and another 100 meters to the Thai border post.
