PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (PT KAI)

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (PT KAI), translated to Indonesian Railways in English, is the main operator of public railways in Indonesia.

The railways in Indonesia was first formed of many different networks since 1864 with the main nationalization of railways taking place in 1942 under the Japanese Occupation for military transport, known as Rikuyu Sokyuku (Department of Railways). After the Japanese Occupation, the railways remained nationalized under the Djawatan Kereta Api Republik Indonesia (DKARI).

Today, PT KAI operates the networks in Java and Sumatra, with various subsidiaries to provide a comprehensive railway experience, transporting more than 352 million passengers and 32 million tonnes of cargo a year (2016).
