Day 37: Talad Rot Fai Ratchada

I didn’t take much pictures in Bangkok as I actually forgot to take them. But the places I’ve been are the typical places that I would go on a normal visit to Bangkok, so there’s nothing blog-worthy about them anyway.

It was, however, my first time to the new Rot Fai Market in Ratchada. I have been to the original one near Bang Sue and the popular, biggest one at Srinakarin (behind Seacon Square), so this visit completes my “pilgrimage” all three Rot Fai Markets.

If you’re wondering how the name Rot Fai Market probably came about, rotfai means railway, and the original Rot Fai Market at Bang Sue was situated in a disused part of the railway yard.

Today, Rot Fai is probably synonymous with hipster among tourists.

Talad Rot Fai Ratchada is definitely easier to get to as it’s nearer to the city and is more compact, making finding the things that I wanted to buy much easier than at Srinakarin.

Live music is close to the entrance, making it really easy to find the place, just by listening to where the typical Rot Fai Market sounds are coming from.

As compared to the previous two markets, the stalls here are under foldable canopies instead of blocks of stalls, offering no shelter should the night be raining. The stalls are also laid out in one giant plot of land, so it’s actually easier to navigate.

The pubs, as you would expect, are in a lane near the back of the market, with plenty of vintage vehicles around, just like how you would expect it to be. Most of them are containers though. A different charm as compared to the previous two markets.

Talad Rot Fai Ratchada is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 5pm to 1am. Stop at Thailand Cultural Centre MRT Station and walk through Esplanade Shopping Mall with the crowd for a shortcut.
