Bangkok–Butterworth Train Service Set for July 2025 Revival

The Special Express 45/46 (International Express) train was not extended to Butterworth Railway Station in Malaysia on 1 July 2025. It is not known when or if the Special Express 45/46 (International Express) train will actually be extended to Butterworth Railway Station in Malaysia.

Thailand and Malaysia have announced the return of the direct Special Express 45/46 (International Express) train service between Bangkok and Butterworth, Penang, with operations scheduled to resume by July 2025. This landmark move follows high-level transport talks in Bangkok and marks the restoration of a vital cross-border rail link that has been suspended since December 2016.

The direct service will eliminate the current need for passengers to change trains at Padang Besar, streamlining travel between the Thai capital and northern Malaysia’s key transport hub. The extension is expected to significantly boost tourism, trade, and economic cooperation, providing a seamless connection for travelers and freight between the two countries.

The Bangkok–Butterworth International Express 35/36 route was once a popular and iconic international rail service, offering a scenic and convenient journey between Thailand and Malaysia. The termination of Special Express 35/36 (International Express) in 2016 upon the completion of the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) and launch of the CNR Thaksinarath service forced travellers on to the local KTM Komuter Northern Sector at the border, complicating and downgrading cross-border mobility.

The direct Special Express 45/46 (International Express) train service between Bangkok and Butterworth revival is part of a broader effort to deepen bilateral ties, enhance regional connectivity, and support economic integration in the region.

Government Statements and Cooperation

During a meeting at Thailand’s Ministry of Transport, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit and Malaysian Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook reaffirmed their commitment to the project. Both sides agreed to expedite the signing of new Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on cross-border transport of goods and passengers, aiming for completion by July 2025 to coincide with the train’s relaunch.

The discussions also covered customs facilitation, digital driver’s license integration, and the development of supporting infrastructure such as the Perlis Inland Port near Padang Besar, expected to open in phases from 2025 to ease logistics congestion.

Implications for Travellers and Trade

The restored service will connect Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal directly to Butterworth, the gateway to Penang Island, without the need for border transfers. The move is anticipated to attract both tourists and business travelers, as well as facilitate more efficient freight movement. Authorities are working to ensure customs and immigration processes are streamlined for the new service.

Next Steps

Both SRT and KTMB are finalizing operational details, with test runs and joint studies underway. The initial phase of the revived service is expected to last six months, after which further enhancements may be considered.

“The return of the Bangkok–Butterworth train will not only reconnect two vibrant regions but also symbolize the strengthening of Thai–Malaysian partnership for the benefit of both nations’ people,” said Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit.

The Special Express 45/46 extension to Butterworth is poised to become a new milestone in ASEAN rail connectivity, promising convenience, economic growth, and renewed cross-border collaboration.
