KTMB Goes Fully Cashless, Seamless Train Ticket Payments Across Klang Valley, Northern, Southern & East Coast Sectors Starting 1 January 2025
Starting 1 January 2025, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will implement a fully cashless ticketing system for all train services across the Klang Valley, Northern, Southern, and East Coast sectors. Announced in a media release on 1 November 2024, this transition to cashless payments is set to enhance passenger convenience and streamline ticketing for KTMB’s nationwide network.
This cashless initiative aims to create a more efficient and competitive society, aligning with the Government’s digitalization goals focused on inclusivity, safety, and transparency. It also supports national efforts to transform Malaysia into a competitive digital economy, including the shift towards a cashless society.
During the transition phase from now till the end of 2024, KTMB will provide exposure and awareness, especially for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities (OKU), to help them adapt before the full implementation next year. Through these efforts, KTMB hopes this target group will become proficient in cashless payments.

“During this period, ticket counters still accept cash transactions. However, once the initiative is fully implemented, all transactions will be cashless. Various channels are being used to promote this campaign, including announcements and videos on KTMB’s official social media, promotional materials at stations, in-train announcements, and collaborations with local banks to set up booths at select stations for customers without debit cards,” said KTMB Group CEO Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin.

“Additionally, frontline staff at stations will assist customers, especially with KTMB Mobile App (KITS) registration, ticket purchases via KITS or kiosk machines, and registration/usage of the Komuter Link card,” he added.
To encourage public support for this cashless campaign, KTMB will offer 500 free rail points to the first 1,000 KITS registrants and distribute 1,000 free Komuter Link cards. KTMB stations, especially in Klang Valley and Northern sectors, are equipped with ticket kiosks for Komuter and ETS ticket purchases. Key East Coast stations already have kiosks for Ekspres Rakyat Timuran and Shuttle Timuran ticket purchases. In the Southern sector, new ticket kiosks will operate at all stations once the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) completes by mid-2025, aside from Johor Bahru Sentral and Kempas Baru stations which already have ticket kiosks. In the meantime, users can purchase tickets via KITS or at www.ktmb.com.my.

An open payment system for KTM Komuter services was introduced earlier this year, offering practical payment methods across all Klang Valley and Northern stations, with over 80 stations now covered. This system enhances the user experience by enabling travel with debit cards, credit cards, and Near Field Communication (NFC) payments like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, alongside KITS and the existing Touch ‘n Go card.
Statistics show 82% of passengers use online payments for ETS and Shuttle Tebrau services via KITS, while 71% utilize cashless payments for the KTM Komuter Klang Valley Sector and KTM Komuter Northern Sector. KTMB currently has over 3 million registered KITS accounts for ETS, KTM Intercity, Shuttle Tebrau, and KTM Komuter ticket purchases.
