KITS Style Prepaid Mastercard by KTMB & Mastercard to Advance Open Payments & Financial Inclusion for Malaysians
KTMB has just taken a big step forward in modernising how Malaysians pay for their journeys – and everyday life – with the launch of the new KITS Style Prepaid Mastercard and KITS Style digital lifestyle app.

A new way to tap, ride and spend
Launched at KL Sentral on 3 March 2026, the KITS Style Prepaid Mastercard is KTMB’s first co-branded card with Mastercard, introduced together with the new KITS Style app. Officiated by KTMB Group CEO Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri and Mastercard Vice Chair Timothy Murphy, the launch underlines a growing partnership to drive digital innovation across Malaysia’s rail and public transport ecosystem.
The card runs on Mastercard’s global payments network and is designed as a lifestyle transit prepaid card, meaning it works for both daily commuting and everyday purchases. Available in virtual and physical form via the KITS Style app, it enables seamless, secure and interoperable payments on KTM services and, over time, across other public transport networks that adopt open payments nationwide.

Why this matters for commuters
For everyday passengers, the KITS Style Prepaid Mastercard is all about faster, simpler journeys and wider digital access. Commuters can enjoy “tap and go” entry, broad merchant acceptance and EMV-secured transactions, cutting down on queues, cash handling and the need to juggle multiple cards.
Crucially, the card also opens doors for unbanked and underbanked Malaysians – including students and underserved communities – who can now access digital payments without needing a traditional bank account. Paired with the KITS Style app, users get a single platform for transport services, bill payments, travel bookings and lifestyle deals, with personalised journey planning, integrated promotions and real-time account management.

How KTMB is transforming behind the scenes
On KTMB’s side, adopting open-loop payments (using a globally accepted network rather than a closed system) brings several long-term benefits. It reduces reliance on cash-based systems, streamlines operations and supports sustainable non-fare revenue growth through co-branding and ecosystem partnerships.
The new platform also enables more data-driven service improvements, helping KTMB refine timetables, crowd management and product offerings based on real usage patterns. This move positions KTMB as a more digitally progressive rail operator, going beyond traditional rail services to integrate payments, mobility and lifestyle in one ecosystem.

Supporting Malaysia’s digital economy goals
The launch aligns closely with Malaysia’s MyDigital initiative and the national Digital Economy Blueprint, both of which emphasise interoperable, inclusive payment infrastructure. By embedding regulated digital payments into everyday mobility, the KTMB–Mastercard collaboration helps expand participation in the digital economy while strengthening trust in secure, cashless transactions.
Mastercard notes that transit is one of the most frequent daily transactions Malaysians make, making it a powerful entry point to bring more people into the digital economy. The company is working with government, rail operators and industry stakeholders to deliver interoperable payment solutions that support Malaysia’s transition to a digitally empowered, less-cash society.

Towards a ‘tap and go’ future
As Malaysia rolls out open payment acceptance across public transport and toll systems, the KITS Style Prepaid Mastercard is built to be future-ready. With a single card, passengers will soon be able to tap and go on KTM Komuter, on other public transport operators that adopt open payments, and eventually across toll networks as full open payment integration comes online.
By reducing the need for multiple cards and payment instruments, the solution promises a more convenient everyday experience and stronger interoperability across the country’s transport ecosystem. For KTMB and Mastercard, this is not just a product launch – it is a step towards a smarter, more connected and more inclusive mobility landscape for Malaysians.
