New KLIA Aerotrain Allegedly Disrupted for 5th Time Since July 2025 Relaunch

The new KLIA Aerotrain system has been met with another setback, as the newly relaunched service reportedly broke down again on 4 August 2025, since opening to the public on 1 July 2025. The latest disruption left numerous passengers stranded, sparking frustration and renewed criticism towards airport authorities.

The incident came to light after frustrated passengers posted photos and accounts on social media, showing crowds of passengers forced to make their way towards one of the airport’s exits after the aerotrain failed to transport them between KLIA Terminal 1’s Main Terminal and the Satellite Building. On X (formerly Twitter), user @afiqmukhtar voiced his anger, questioning the effectiveness of the multi-million Ringgit upgrade and tagging Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) in hopes of drawing official attention to the issue.

Another affected passenger, identified as Zhang, told China Press that stranded passengers were subsequently transported via shuttle buses. Zhang, who was preparing to fly to Hong Kong, said he did not expect the breakdown to occur right before his departure.

History of New KLIA Aerotrain Issues Since Relaunch

The KLIA aerotrain had been out of service since early 2023 for the extensive RM456 million upgrade, finally reopening to the public on July 1. However, just 24 hours after resuming operations, the train suffered its first malfunction. This incident is the fifth-known disruption for the new KLIA Aerotrain.

  • KLIA Aerotrain Disruption on 2 July 2025 – doors jammed due to a group of passengers holding them open for an extended period of time.
  • KLIA Aerotrain Disruption 1 on 4 July 2025 – heavy rainfall led to water accumulating in the tunnel that connects the main terminal with the satellite terminal.
  • KLIA Aerotrain Disruption 2 on 4 July 2025 – doors not being able to close.
  • KLIA Aerotrain Disruption on 12 July 2025 – breaker trip at the MTB substation
  • KLIA Aerotrain Disruption on 4 August 2025 – unknown

My previous attempts to clarify with MAHB on the various disruptions have not been successful as they have not replied me on any queries after insisting that there has only been 1 service interruption on 4 July 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM.

New KLIA Aerotrain Disrupted After July 2025 Relaunch

With a fifth-crowd-sourced-known disruption event now reported just over 1 month of the relaunch, concerns are mounting over the effectiveness and reliability of the costly upgrade. As passengers once again experience delays and disruptions, many are awaiting statements and solutions from airport officials and government stakeholders.

This is a developing story and will be updated if more information becomes available.
