Improved Connectivity for Johor

The new service will provide a direct passenger rail link between Pasir Gudang and Kempas Baru. The route will help ease road congestion, especially during peak hours, by offering an efficient alternative to road travel. Many commuters currently rely on private vehicles or buses, which can be slow due to heavy traffic.

Timeline and Infrastructure

Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that KTMB and RAC have been instructed to introduce passenger services for the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru route within six to 12 months from now, potentially by early 2026 at the latest. The authorities need to construct new infrastructure, including additional stations and upgraded tracks, to support the service.

Currently, there are no passenger stations along this route. The Ministry of Transport is identifying suitable locations to establish simple, functional, and safe boarding points for passengers. At least 3 stations are being considered for the initial phase. The service will initially utilise existing KTM Intercity coaches. There are plans to consider new rolling stock in the future, depending on demand and funding

The new train service will benefit residents, workers, and students who travel between Pasir Gudang and Kempas Baru.

Background: Recent Rail Upgrades

The announcement follows recent upgrades to the Kempas Baru–Pasir Gudang rail line. Previously, this route handled mostly cargo trains, but authorities closed it temporarily to carry out essential rehabilitation and upgrading works due to the poor condition of the tracks. The Pasir Gudang–Kempas Baru line was closed for six months for major upgrading works, which were completed ahead of schedule by temporarily suspending operations.
