Penang Ferry History

The Penang Ferry Service is the oldest ferry service in Malaysia established in 1984, connecting Georgetown on Penang Island with Butterworth on the mainland.

Initially starting as a passenger-only service in 1894, it was later adapted to accommodate automobiles in 1925. Originally managed by Beng Brothers, it came under the operation of the Penang Port Commission in 1924, through its subsidiary Penang Port Sdn Bhd.

In 2017, the Malaysian government initiated the transfer of the ferry service from Penang Port Sdn Bhd to Prasarana Malaysia. Subsequently rebranded as Rapid Ferry, the service ceased operations on December 31, 2020, after three years under the new management.

In 2021, Penang Port Sdn Bhd resumed control of the ferry service from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and introduced temporary fast ferries between the mainland and the island.

On 7 August 2023, the new generation of ferries commenced operations, carrying foot passengers, motorcycles, and bicycles only. The 4 new ferries are christened after bays in Penang, namely Teluk Bahang, Teluk Duyung, Teluk Kumbar, and Teluk Kampi.

Sejarah Feri Pulau Pinang
