SRT Nong Khai-Thanaleng Shuttle Train (Defunct) รถไฟรถรับส่งหนองคาย-ท่านาแล้ง

EXP 918 Thanaleng Nong Khai 036

The Nong Khai-Thanaleng Shuttle Train was a popular mode of transport between the Thai border town of Nong Khai to Thanaleng or Dongphosy, the only passenger railway station in Laos just after the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge across the Mekong River. The shuttle train between Nong Khai and Thanaleng (Vientiane) commenced on 5 March 2009, making it the first dedicated cross-border shuttle train in ASEAN. It operates a return leg from Nong Khai twice daily, which connects to the overnight Isan Mankha service to and from Bangkok.

If the departure timings do not suit you, try the Nong Khai – Vientiane Bus / Minivan.

The last day of operations for the SRT Nong Khai-Thanaleng Shuttle Train was on 19 July 2024. With the extension of the Laotian railway line to Vientiane (Khamsavath) Railway Station, through train services with Thailand cities will operate including the Rapid 133/134 for Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and Rapid 147/148 for Udon Thani. Thanaleng is also now closed to passengers, and will serve freight traffic only.

This Lao National Railway line extension is not to be confused with the Laos-China Railway (LCR). This Lao National Railway line extension is a meter-gauge line with physical links to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore. This Lao National Railway line extension terminates at Vientiane (Khamsavath), and cannot physically continue on to Luang Prabang, Kunming, or Beijing. You may self-transfer from Vientiane (Khamsavath) Railway Station to LCR Vientiane Railway Station, which at the closest distance is 13.2km apart on Google Maps.
