Hat Yai Junction Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟชุมทางหาดใหญ่)

Hat Yai Junction Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟชุมทางหาดใหญ่), originally named Khok Samet Chun Railway Station, is located on Rotfai Road, Hat Yai Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. It is a Class 1 station on the Southern Line of the State Railway of Thailand. South from this station, the railway splits into two routes: one heading towards Sungai Kolok Railway Station, near the Malaysian border in Kelantan, and the other heading to Padang Besar in Malaysia. A third route, which previously extended to Songkhla at Boi Yang Subdistrict, Mueang Songkhla District, Songkhla Province, has been discontinued.

Initially, the junction was located at U-Taphao Junction Railway Station, but frequent flooding issues prompted the State Railway of Thailand to purchase land from Khun Niphat Chinnakorn (Chia Ki Si) and relocate the station to Khok Samet Chun. In 1917, it was renamed Hat Yai Junction Railway Station. U-Taphao Junction then became a railway halt.

From 1 January 1914 to 30 June 1978, a railway service operated between Hat Yai and Songkhla on a branch line, covering a distance of approximately 29 kilometers. The Songkhla branch line was shut down on 1 July 1978.

In the past, railways were the primary mode of transportation in southern Thailand. Hat Yai’s importance as a key railway junction contributed significantly to its economic growth. Over time, Hat Yai District expanded to become a major urban and commercial center, surpassing even Mueang Songkhla District, the provincial capital, in size and economic activity.

The railway line connecting Hat Yai in Thailand to Padang Besar on the Malaysia-Thailand border officially opened on 1 July 1918. This development established a continuous metre-gauge rail link between Thailand and British Malaya, enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating travel and trade between the two territories.

The Baldwin locomotive No. 244 is preserved at Hat Yai Junction Railway Station.
