Sungai Kolok–Rantau Panjang Thailand–Malaysia Railway Extension Set For 2026 Revival
In a significant move to strengthen cross-border connectivity, Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to extend the SRT Southern Line from its current terminus at Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat, Thailand, across the border to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, Malaysia, focusing on the rehabilitation of the disused Sungai Kolok – Rantau Panjang railway line.
Train services are expected to commence operations on this extension in 2026. This will be the second rail border crossing between Malaysia and Thailand, located on the East Coast. If all existing trains are extended south to Rantau Panjang, similar to how Ban Klong Luk Border is operated on the SRT Eastern Line, this will provide direct train services from Kelantan to Pattani, Hat Yai, Hua Hin, and Bangkok.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity
This project is part of a broader initiative to boost economic, trade, and tourism links, as well as to promote development in the border regions of both countries, following high-level transport talks in Bangkok. Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, revealed that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) of Malaysia have been tasked with jointly planning and implementing the cross-border train service to Rantau Panjang.

Passengers can connect between the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) at Rantau Panjang Railway Station and KTM Berhad railway line at Pasir Mas Railway Station by Mutiara Rentas Desa (MRD) Bus Service 29.
Progress and Implementation
Both sides are expediting negotiations and are preparing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cross-border passenger and freight rail transport. The goal is to finalise and sign the MOU by July 2025, paving the way for seamless train operations across the border. Discussions also cover customs and immigration procedures to ensure smooth and efficient travel for passengers and freight.
Economic and Social Impact
The resumption of this cross-border rail service, which has been suspended since 1978, is anticipated to stimulate border economies, promote trade, investment, and tourism, and improve the quality of life for people in the region.
Conclusion
The extension of the railway line from Bangkok–Sungai Kolok to Rantau Panjang represents a major step forward in ASEAN rail connectivity. Scheduled for launch in 2026, the project is set to deliver long-term economic and social benefits to both Thailand and Malaysia, reinforcing their partnership and regional integration.
