Deutsche Bahn Flughafen Express (FEX) Berlin Airport Express Train from Berlin Hauptbahnhof (tief) to Berlin Ostkreuz
The Deutsche Bahn Flughafen Express (FEX) is Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s Airport Express Train operating between Flughafen BER Terminal 1-2 and Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Berlin Central Railway Station, making 2 brief stops at 2 other major railway stations in Berlin. As there is no premium fare charged for the FEX, I could also use it to travel within the city using a regular Berlin AB ticket.
Berlin Hauptbahnhof
The Berlin Flughafen Express (FEX) starts its journey at Berlin Hauptbahnhof (tief) on the underground tracks.
Heading in to Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
The Flughafen Express (FEX) was already waiting at the platform when I arrived. The FEX operates with a DB 147 Bombardier TRAXX locomotive and a rake of 4 high/low entrance Dostos coaches.

Berlin Ostkreuz
Arriving at Berlin Ostkreuz.
The FEX journey from Berlin Hauptbahnhof (tief) to Berlin Ostkreuz takes 12 minutes.
The FEX continues on to its next and final stop of Flughafen BER Terminal 1-2 at Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
Berlin Ostkreuz means “Berlin East Cross” and is a major train interchange with lines intersecting perpendicularly on different levels.
Conclusion
Overall, it was a quick and pleasant express journey within Berlin city on board the FEX with no premium fare charged.
I think there is a premium because standard AB ticket is 3€ and FEX from BER airport is 3.80€.
BER Airport is in Zone C, therefore an ABC ticket is needed. This is for any train from BER Airport to the city (Zone A). There is no additional premium fare for the FEX.
