East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) 东海岸衔接铁道

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) (东海岸衔接铁道) is a major infrastructure project currently under construction in Peninsular Malaysia. ECRL is a standard-gauge, single-track electrified railway designed to connect Port Klang on the west coast to Kota Bharu on the east coast, traversing the East Coast Economic Region states of Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, facilitating easier movement of people and goods between the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. The total planned length of the ECRL railway is approximately 665 kilometers. At speeds of passenger trains up to 160km/h, the ECRL will significantly cut travel time from Kota Bharu to ITT Gombak (Kuala Lumpur) to approximately 4 hours.

The ECRL is the largest economic cooperation project between Malaysia and China, with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) serving as the main contractor. ECRL is a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aiming to strengthen regional connectivity and economic integration in Southeast Asia.

East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Rolling Stock 車輛

Former Plan: CRRC Zhuzhou CJ6-type EMU (CJ6型电力动车组)

The CJ6 6-car EMU (CJ6型电力动车组) is a 160km/h intercity EMU developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. , Ltd., based on the EMU trains exported by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. to Malaysia and Macedonia, designed mainly for the needs of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Intercity Railway, and was initially proposed as the passenger rolling stock for the ECRL. However, since 2020, promotional material by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has changed this to Fuxing CR200J EMUs, similar to the Laos–China Railway (LCR).

Fuxing CR200J EMU (复兴号CR200J型动车组) with FXD1-J Electric Locomotive (复兴号FXD1-J型动力车)

The Fuxing CR200J EMU (复兴号CR200J型动车组) is a push-pull train sold as a “Power Concentrated EMU” – a 6-car train set using a FXD1-J electric locomotive (复兴号FXD1-J型动力车), 4 trailer 25TB coaches, and 1 trailer 25TB coach with duplicating cab. It is the slowest member of the Fuxing series, and the only class of the Fuxing series designed for existing railways under 200km/h. The CR200J is sold as a “Power Concentrated EMU”, with a FXD1-J electric locomotive providing the power.

  • Operation speed: 160km/h
  • Quantity: 11 sets
  • 6 Cars in 1 set – 1 motor car (FXD1-J Electric Locomotive), 5 passenger cars (25TB coaches)
  • Business Class Set 一等座车 – 409 rotatable seats in a 2+2 configuration
  • Premier Economy Class Set 二等座车 – 425 rotatable seats in a 3+2 configuration

HXD3CA Electric Locomotive (和谐3CA型电力机车)

The HXD3CA (和谐3CA型电力机车) is a high-power electric locomotive developed and manufactured in China, primarily by CNR Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock, with later production by CRRC Beijing Locomotive Co., Ltd. It is part of the “Harmony” (和谐, Hexie) series of Chinese electric locomotives.

  • Operation speed: 80km/h
  • Quantity: 12 locomotives
  • Freight and shunting operation
  • Operates on electrified tracks only

DF8B Diesel Locomotive (东风8B型内燃机车)

The DF8B (东风8B型内燃机车) is the second generation of the Dongfeng 8, a high-power, diesel-electric locomotive widely used in China and exported to several countries. It is primarily designed for heavy freight transport on mainline standard gauge railways.

In response to the track laying and construction logistics needs of the ECRL project, CCCC ordered 8 DF8B diesel locomotives from CRRC Ziyang Co., Ltd. to be responsible for the traction and transportation of track materials along the entire line, including 500-meter-long rail transportation, ballast transportation, guard rail installation, station line material transportation, and shunting within the base. In view of the local tropical climate environment in Malaysia, the Malaysian batch of DF8B locomotives has enhanced corrosion resistance and moisture-proof design, optimized structure of key components such as locomotive diesel engines, and improved quality of locomotive pipe wiring and oil and water pipelines.

Once the ECRL is completed, the DF8B diesel locomotives will operate freight trains on both electrified and non-electrified sectors.

  • Operation speed: 80km/h
  • Quantity: 8 locomotives
  • Freight and shunting operation
  • Operates on electrified and non-electrified tracks
