KTM Intercity Train Operations in the East Coast Disrupted (2024 Northeastern Peninsular Malaysia Floods)
KTM Intercity train services along the East Coast Line have been disrupted due to flooding and landslides in several areas, affecting passenger train operations. As of today, certain areas have been deemed unsafe for train services, with water levels exceeding track height between KM493 and KM490.85, specifically between Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah.
Consequently, the KTM Intercity Express Rakyat Timuran ERT 27 service on the JB Sentral-Tumpat route has been cancelled since last night.
Train services affected today include the Express Rakyat Timuran No. 26 and No. 27 on the JB Sentral – Tumpat – JB Sentral route, as well as the Shuttle Timuran service between Kuala Lipis, Gua Musang, and Tumpat, due to flooding.
KTMB Chief Operating Officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha stated that the cancellations were necessary to ensure passenger safety. He assured that updates will be provided regularly.
Passengers impacted and unable to continue their journeys will receive a full refund. Notifications regarding route closures and service updates will be communicated via SMS and KTMB’s official social media channels.
As a responsive measure, KTMB has activated its flood operations room in the East Coast sector to monitor train movements and provide situational updates. KTMB’s preparations not only focus on train operations during floods but also include assistance plans for flood victims at KTMB stations, ensuring systematic, swift, and effective aid delivery.
“KTMB is conducting flood risk monitoring based on daily reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia). Priority is also given to locations frequently affected by floods,” stated KTMB in its official release.
Additionally, KTMB is working closely with agencies such as the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia to ensure efficient rescue and incident management efforts.
KTMB has also deployed critical assets, including rail trolleys, to monitor water levels along main routes and areas prone to landslides. Extra equipment, such as safety tools, communication devices, and emergency aid supplies, has been prepared for flood-related needs.
