KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn from Butterworth to Taiping by Train

KTM Komuter Utara Train from Butterworth to Taiping

With a free day in Penang, and having completed all my Penang Hill objectives the day before, I decided to hop over to the mainland to have a train ride. I’ve always wanted to pay a visit to the old Taiping Railway Station, but haven’t got a chance yet, so the opportunity presented itself with the lunchtime KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn train from Butterworth to Padang Rengas via Taiping.

Butterworth Railway Station

I arrived at Butterworth Railway Station from the Penang Fast Ferry just in time for the 12.10pm departure of KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn.

Heading into Butterworth Railway Station.

I had 12 minutes to board the KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn from now.

Heading to the concourse.

Ticket kiosks and counter are around the concourse.

I had pre-purchased my KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn ticket from on the KTMB Mobile App, so I headed straight to the Automated Control Gate (ACG).

I’ll be travelling on most of the Butterworth-Padang Rengas Line. The sticker pasting over the former full route to Butterworth has not been removed despite KTM Komuter Northern Sector Butterworth-Padang Rengas Line train services now originating in Butterworth.

My KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn train departed from Butterworth right on time at 12.10pm.

The extended low platforms can be found at both ends of the platform at Bagan Serai Railway Station. Not sure what these are for, since there are no KTM Intercity services in the northern sector.

Taiping Railway Station

My KTM Komuter Northern Sector 2905dn arrived at Taiping Railway Station right on time at 1.14pm. The KTM Komuter Northern Sector journey from Butterworth to Taiping takes 1 hour and 4 minutes.

I had thought that most passengers would alight at Taiping, but surprisingly to me, quite a number of passengers were continuing on to Padang Rengas.

From here, I headed to the old Taiping Railway Station for a bit of exploration and lunch.

Conclusion

The KTM Komuter Northern Sector Butterworth-Padang Rengas Line is a popular service even on a weekday afternoon. Unfortunately there are only 6 pairs of trains a day, and the timetable does not match up with the more frequent KTM Komuter Northern Sector Butterworth-Padang Besar Line.

I hope more services can be added on the Butterworth-Padang Rengas Line, since only 1 train set is used at most times of the day. If a second train set can be assigned to the Butterworth-Padang Rengas Line, frequency can be almost doubled easily.
