DLR Rail Replacement Bus Service A from Tower Gateway (Stop TC) to Canary Wharf (Stop G) by Bus

From the Tower of London, I decided to go to Greenwich Park to check off another item on the typical London to-do list. Unfortunately, on the day of my travel, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) was not in operation from Bank and Tower Gateway to Poplar and West India Quay due to planned maintenance works. Rail replacement bus services were in place for the affected sectors.

Lots of planned closures this weekend, affecting the DLR, Circle Line and District Line from Tower Hill and Tower Gateway stations. Not a good day to travel by train here today.

Even though the signs say that you must have a valid ticket to travel on the replacement bus service, and that normal DLR fares will apply, when attempting to pay with my Oyster, I was waved on board by the staff who told me to “just grab a seat, mate”. I guess there’s no way for them to compute the fares if I changed to the DLR at Canary Wharf without charging me a double fare if I had touched on to the bus assuming I wouldn’t have reached my daily cap, so the trust/free system is in place.

The DLR operates with single-articulated cars, with 2 or 3 cars usually forming 1 set. A 3-car set easily stretches from Canary Wharf to Heron Quays – that shows how short the distance between those 2 stations are.

To help with the line closures, a special Canary Wharf – Woolwich Arsenal DLR service replacing the regular Bank – Woolwich Arsenal service is in place to reduce the number of transfers a passenger would further require to take at Poplar. This departs from the middle track of Canary Wharf.
