The Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok High Speed Rail (HSR) is the proposed high-speed rail system that would connect Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Bangkok, Thailand. Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha have agreed to carry out a feasibility study for the Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok High Speed Rail (HSR) at the Government House of Thailand on 26 February 2022.

30 September 2021: Malaysia Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin suggested that the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project be expanded north to Bangkok.*

“I support the government’s plan to implement the HSR project to Johor Baru*, in fact even towards the North to connect HSR from Bangkok to the Malaysia-Thailand border with private funding involving financial consortiums in the country,” he said in debating the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Sept 30).

*Do note that The Star reports Malaysia Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin suggesting that the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) be extended to Bangkok, however, the quote directly under that statement refers to the Kuala Lumpur-Johor Bahru High Speed Rail (HSR) instead.

26 February 2022: Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha have agreed to carry out a feasibility study for the Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok High Speed Rail (HSR) at the Government House of Thailand. This agreement was made in conjunction with Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s first official visit to Thailand.

15 March 2022: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong confirms that the Ministry of Transport is exploring the possibility of having a HSR feasibility study from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok.
