Guillemard View @ Kusial • New Guillemard Bridge View Point & Recreational Park

Guillemard View @ Kusial

Guillemard View @ Kusial is a new, unique recreational park located adjacent to the historical Guillemard Bridge, the oldest railway bridge still in operation in Malaysia. Works are still being done at Guillemard View @ Kusial, but the facility is already partially opened to the public. Guillemard Bridge will be 100 years old on 19 July 2024, and the opening of Guillemard View @ Kusial fits nicely with this milestone.

Former Sungei Kusial Railway Halt

Guillemard View @ Kusial is located near the road end just before Guillemard Bridge, where the former Sungei Kusial Railway Halt once served passengers.

There are now barbed wires separating the road and railway track, but there is a pedestrian access with steps at the end of it.

The former Sungei Kusial Railway Halt is located between 2 railway bridges, one short and one grand.

The railway line is still in active use, as it is the core KTM East Coast Line.

Check the train timetables and listen out for approaching trains when visiting the former Sungei Kusial Railway Halt and Guillemard Bridge. Stay away from the railway tracks when a train is approaching.

Guillemard Bridge

Guillemard Bridge is a single-track railway truss bridge, the longest set of railway truss bridges in Malaysia, and the oldest railway bridge in operation at almost 100 years old, as declared opened on Saturday, 19 July 1924. Guillemard Bridge is named after the British Governor for the Straits Settlements, Sir Laurence Guillemard.

A sign for the FMSR Guillemard Bridge still stands in front of the bridge.

Guillemard Bridge spans 600 meters across the Kelantan River.

The number 1260 denotes the bridge number ie. “Bridge 1260”, corresponding to the Guillemard Bridge. Guillemard Bridge was most definitely not built in the year 1260.

Benches resembling flat wagons are also available along the footpath.

There are concrete benches which look out to the Kelantan River and Guillemard Bridge on the river bank.

A stray destroyed truss lump sits below the last span of the bridge in the Kelantan River. This is quite possibly the span that was destroyed by the British forces retreating south to Kuala Krai in December 1941 at the start of World War II in Malaya to prevent the Imperial Japanese Army advancing.

The southern part of Guillemard View @ Kusial is not opened to the public yet. A playground and possibly commercial outlets formed of former shipping containers are still being built.

Outside Guillemard View @ Kusial, the road is still being paved, including what looks like an upcoming car park.
