The affected Ekspres Selatan 45dn train was said to have involved a locomotive, generator carriage, and three passenger carriages.

However, pictures shows that it was a 26 Class Blue Tiger locomotive, a new INKA PGC, 1 ASC (Hyundai-Padu Sedia), 1 ABC, and 1 ASC (Hyundai-Padu Sedia), which means the Ekspres Selatan 45dn was hauling only 2 passenger coaches, since the ABC is a canteen rather than having seats for sale.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) CEO Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin mentioned that the land near the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) site where the derailment occurred was muddy, believed to be due to heavy rain in the afternoon. The affected Ekspres Selatan 45dn train had also stopped before it derailed.

All affected Ekspres Selatan 45dn train passengers and staff were transferred by bus to continue their journey to Johor Bahru Sentral Railway Station (JB Sentral).
