Masks Not Required On Indonesia Public Transport From 9 June 2023

The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has issued four Circular Letters (SE) outlining health protocols for domestic and foreign travelers regarding Health Protocols in the Transitional Period of the COVID-19 Pandemic, with the key points mentioned that passengers using public transport are not required to wear masks as long as they are in good health, published and effective on 9 June 2023.

In accordance with the Task Force’s Circular Letters (SE), the Ministry of Transportation has issued four SEs: SE No. 14 for land transportation, SE No. 15 for sea transportation, SE No. 16 for air transportation, and SE No. 17 for railways.

In general, the new SEs from the Ministry of Transportation cover the following regulations:

  • Passengers are advised to complete their vaccination, including receiving the second booster or fourth dose, especially individuals at a high risk of transmission.
  • Passengers who are in good health and not at risk of contracting or transmitting the virus are allowed to forgo wearing masks.
  • Passengers who are unwell or at risk of exposure to COVID-19 are encouraged to continue wearing properly covered masks.

The Ministry of Transportation’s new SEs aim to establish guidelines for travelers, emphasizing the importance of vaccination, allowing mask exemption for healthy individuals, and promoting mask usage for those who are unwell or at risk of COVID-19 exposure.

Masks not required on Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) trains from 12 June 2023

Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has announced that masks are no longer required on trains from 12 June 2023. Vaccines are also no longer mandatory for travel, and downgraded to a recommendation.

Move to Endemicity

Indonesia is one of the last countries in the world to remove the mask mandate. However, it is not the last in ASEAN. Mask wearing on public transport continues to be mandatory in Laos, Malaysia, and the Philippines as of 22 June 2023.
